GM does not issue stock certificates. Rather, GM uses a form of registered stock ownership called book entry or Direct Registration Profile System (DRS). Book-entry ownership is more convenient for investors because it eliminates the risk of lost or stolen certificates and the cost to replace the lost or stolen certificates, and the sale or transfer of the stock is simplified.
Did the old General Motors Corporation’s common stock, CUSIP 370442105, become the new GM common stock and, if not, does the stock currently have any value?
No. The old General Motors Corporation’s common stock became Motors Liquidation Company common stock in July 2009, and traded as MTLQQ on the over the counter market until the confirmed bankruptcy plan cancelled the shares on March 31, 2011. The shareholders did not receive any consideration for their holdings and the stock no longer has value.

Stock Repurchase Program

Between 2015 and 2022, GM’s Board of Directors authorized a share repurchase program to repurchase GM common stock with an aggregate total of approximately $15.7 billion authorized. As of Q1 2024, $1.1 billion in capacity from this authorization remains in place and the company intends to opportunistically purchase shares at the discretion of management.

In November 2023 the Board of Directors also approved an Accelerated Share Repurchase (ASR) Program in the amount of $10 billion. In Q4 2023, we advanced the $10.0 billion related to the ASR and received approximately 215 million shares of our common stock with a value of $6.8 billion, which were immediately retired. The remaining $3.2B authorized under the ASR will be bought back by the participating banks during 2024.
